How do you cope when your child wants
something which is more than you can afford to pay?
Do you put yourself into debt to get your child what they want or do you say 'No' and not buy it?

i usually tell the boys its a lot of money and maybe i can get it for them next month ( by then hopefully theyve forgotten) been their and done that with
getting into debt and wont do it again , if i aint got the money and their still going on then i will say no sorry but i havnt got the money maybe you might
have it for your birthday or xmas depending on which is closer ( my eldest wants a lap top for school so im saving every penny i can ) but in the long run of
it i have said if i cant get it then you will have to wait .
what have they asked for maybe you could get it on e-bay it cheaper and you can get most things brand new |

I would explain that we can't afford it and give reasons why. I would also try and save so they could have it for Christmas.

I've learned that you have to say no.........they need to know that life can be tough and they also need to have decisions. When son got old enough to
understand............he'd make a christmas list........#1 Was the most important thing he wanted.....#2,3,4, and 5 were much smaller and depending on how
expensive his #1 was......he might only get #1 and #2......
But they need to know that you have to save for what you truly want.........or when they end up on they're own........they will be so far into debt........as to never come out...

I agree with you there queeny, my eldest is awful with money and my youngest omg that kid is gonna be ok she knows exact amounts of money, the one year for
mothersday they went to get me some flowers etc and cat point blank refused to give more than 50p as she was saving her money rofl so im not to worried about
her
The other one im worried about as im still trying to teach her but she is getting there slowly. |

Mine is a scrooge with HIS money........but pretty free spending of
MINE!
He just called.........at first his weekend was so full of studying and activities that he could not possibly see us.............NOW.....however, it suddenly seems that HIS Laundry room is not as NICE as OUR laundry room. (In "read between the lines lingo", that means.....Mom will you do my laundry, oh and btw, will you make taco's for dinner!!)

i agree, my two only have christmas and birthday presents, it is very rare but they may have something i have seen and i think that they will like just for
being good. If they aren't behaving then they don't gets treats. If i am walking through the supermarket and they are good i may get them a magazine or
something like that and you'd think i'd have given them the world. If they ask for something then they don't get anything. This is something i have
always been strict on. I would get into debt just because the kids asked for something.
Last year i was changing jobs just before christmas and my wages were all over the place, so it was done on a budget, kids first, then family members then us. I bought all brand new things the kids wanted on e-bay and amazon as they wanted pc and ps games as well as toys there main present was a bike each that i paid weekly for at our local sports shop and paid it all off 2 days before christmas. It's hard telling the kids NO but a much needed life lesson. Hope this helps. carlee x |
